Connectivist MOOCs are courses based on the vision of Downes and Siemens.

Coursera - a 3rd party distributor of MOOCs created by universities. As of October 2012, Coursera has served 1,755,551 students from 196 countries

Open Learning Initiative from Carnegie Mellon provides courses for use by both students and instructors. This nonprofit organization is supported by grants from the Gates Foundation, Hewlett Foundations, national Science Foundation and others.

OpenLearn is free resources and courses from Open University, UK.

Open Course Series from CourseSites by Blackboard. CourseSites provides a free platform for up to 5 courses per instructor. The MOOCs here focus on "effective use of technology in teaching and learning."

Class Central - This simply lists and links to courses from Stanford, MIT, Harvard edX, Udacity, Open Learning, Coursera and other providers.

Connectivism and Connective Knowledge (CCK08) - Only the course outline is viewable from the University of Manitoba Moodle site.

MOOC MOOC explored the concept of the MOOC in a one-week course.

MobiMOOC - This is the course utilizes a wiki in lieu of a course management system. The creator has no affiliation with an educational institution, and the course is hosted by the company Hybrid Pedagogy, which "is an academic and networked journal that combines the strands of critical and digital pedagogy to arrive at the best social and civil uses of technology and digital media in education."

Tips for Participants

  • Have a goal in mind, and ask for help in reaching it.
  • Be selective; you can't go through all of the sources that are provided or respond to all of the discussions. Stay focused.
  • Decide how you want to participate: lurker, intermediate interaction, or memorable participant.
  • Be succinct in your discussion posts and responses.
  • Provide descriptive titles and headings that clearly communicate the direction of your post.
  • Connect with participants with similar interests and cultivate a relationship.
  • Pace yourself.
  • If you need a break - take it. You can always jump back in.

  • Follow your interests, but look beyond the major providers.
  • Be realistic about the time you have.
  • Get prepared by browsing the course page before it starts.
  • Take it easy. Don't feel obligated to follow all the discussion in the first days.
  • Don't be shy. There's more value in collaboration than in completion.
  • Hang on. With no teacher checking on you, you need to remind yourself of your own motivation.
  • Continue networking. A lot of the value of the course comes afterward.
